Jay Hardin
Jay M. Hardin was born in 1976 and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas. At an early
age Jay developed artistic interests in drawing and music. He learned the
craft of screen-printing, which expanded his interests in fine art, eventually
leading him to oil painting. After graduating high school, stemming from a
desire to see a new part of the country, Jay moved to Tucson,
Arizona, to enroll as a student at the University of Arizona. There he studied painting,
printmaking, sound, video, and art history. In 2000 he earned a BFA in
painting from the University
of Arizona. While
living in Tucson, Jay developed a special
interest in the ancient art of the Americas
and made visits to various archaeological sites in Arizona,
Mexico, Guatemala, Belize,
and Peru.
The art and architecture of Mesoamerican and Andean cultures has had a
significant influence in his art over the years, both visually and
conceptually.
Jay went on to receive his Masters in Fine Arts in drawing
from Arizona State University
in 2007. During his time as a graduate student he focused on developing new
techniques in his process for creating abstract and organic images, mimicking
the textures and rhythmic processes found in the natural world.
Experimentation with sound also played an important role in his thesis work
where he combined field recordings and samples to create unique soundscapes
and instrumental compositions. Jay continues to explore the complementary
relationship of visual and sonic elements in his current research and
creative projects.
Jay lives and works in
Phoenix, Arizona, and is a professor at the Art Institute of Phoenix,
teaching painting, drawing, and design. He has also taught various art
courses at Arizona State University,
Phoenix Country
Day School, University
of Missouri, and has assisted in the
drawing studio at Penland
School of Crafts. He
recently worked with the Arts, Media, and Engineering program at Arizona
State University as Program Manager for the Situated Multimedia Art Learning
Lab (SMALLab), a K-12 Embodied and Mediated Learning project working with
students in Scottsdale, Arizona and New York City. Previously, Jay worked as
Program Coordinator for art and dance at the Herberger Institute Community
School for Design and the Arts. He is a former member of the Eye Lounge
Artist Collective in Phoenix and is currently
represented by Platform Gallery in Tucson,
Arizona.
