artist Teha Nightsounds Nightsounds, adds a modern and regional twist to traditional
Sumi-e (brush painting on rice paper).
Her brush work is done in the Japanese style of black to light gray
but her themes are those of the "Not only is it extremely difficult to apply a watery
medium onto delicate rice paper,"
Nightsounds says.
"But the one stroke technique offers quite a challenge to
painting." She adds that
when painting she aspires to bring out the "essence or spirit" of
the subject matter rather than paint a strict representation. So rather than freeze or capture a
moment she tries to paint a feeling of movement and life. "The poetry of nature and
life," she says. And although her paintings are
regional to some extent this style gives them a universal appeal and an added
dimension. |
