In this new series of artworks, thickly-textured brushmarks offer a dreamlike sense of space. Meanwhile, these modestly-sized oil paintings depict cartoonish motifs that become totemic through the artist's use of layered oil paint and a restrained color palette.
In this seemingly simple image, two stars rise above a horizon and get reflected as three stars in a stark yin-yang composition.
Through his masterful use of impasto and improvisation, Alex Lemke riffs off of art history’s rich landscape and still-life traditions to create his psychedelic paintings. While working, Lemke’s mind takes left turns as he gets seduced by visual nonsequiturs. Heavily influenced by the physicality of post-impressionism, Lemke’s sculptural painting materials ultimately define his idiosyncratic compositions while offering his scenes a fantastical and otherworldly flourish.
