Era Un Bel Re (He Was a Nice King)
Lulashi’s paintings draw from layers of consciousness to excavate the instinctive drives behind our mass commercialization of the female body. By focusing on carnal points of contact, she positions the viewer as a voyeur who has stumbled into someone’s private room or a clearing where figures have emerged. Taken from still images of pornography and propaganda, Lulashi’s exposed yet anonymous subjects become trembling, sensitive creatures through her process.
Iva Lulashi’s work references photo and video stills that reflect the visual language of Albanian history. By combining them with erotic video stills, she creates paintings that blur the boundaries between propaganda, sex scenes, and healthy outdoor activities.
