Drawing both from art history and popular culture, Lisa Yuskavage creates figurative works that challenge genre conventions in their emotional range and formal invention. The artist frequently depicts characters the are both exhibitionist and introspective—figures who are simultaneously on display while observing themselves and their environment. Yuskavage's fantastical compositions combine realistic and abstract elements where color determines meaning and harmony coexists with conflict.

BIO:

Lisa Yuskavage was born in 1962. The artist received a BFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in 1984 and an MFA from Yale University in 1986. Ten years later, Yuskavage was awarded the prestigious Tiffany Foundation Grant.

Solo exhibitions of Yuskavage's work have taken place at: the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2000), which included an accompanying catalogue; the Museo Tamayo Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City, Mexico City (2006); Royal Academy of Arts in London, UK (2002); and the Centre d’Art Contemporain in Geneva, Switzerland (2001); among others.

Group exhibitions that have shown Yuskavage's work include: the 2000 Whitney Biennial in New York City; Greater New York at P.S. 1/MoMA in New York City; the 46th Biennial at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York City; Saatchi Gallery in London, UK; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in California; and the Royal Hibernian Academy for Dublin Contemporary in Ireland (2011).

Lisa Yuskavage was invited to work in ULAE’s studios in 2001. Yuskavage’s editions are in the permanent collections of: MoMA in New York City; the Museum of Fine Arts Houston in Texas; and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; among other institutions.
