This photograph depicts a clown eating a mound of spaghetti, redeploying the archetypal figure within the domestic sphere. Robert Sandler's practice frequently deconstructs meaning by frustrating the viewer’s desire. He playfully explores our collective fantasies in images that reference popular culture and parody domestic life. Spanning across multiple media and a range of styles, Sandler’s work charts the political possibilities of excess and failure.
BIO:
Robert Sandler was born in 1991 in Baltimore, Maryland. He holds an MFA in painting from the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College.
A solo exhibition of Sandler’s work took place at Kai Matsumiya Gallery in New York City in 2021.
