① Artwork:

Untitled

This painting combines fundamental visual elements—simple shapes, modulated values and color relationships—to create a poetic and humanistic composition that feels both strange and familiar. Matt Phillips creates oil pastels on paper as a regular part of his studio practice. At times, these works allow the artist to resolve a painting that has stalled. In other instances, these paintings let Phillips see one of his images played in a new color key or at a different scale. Regardless of the context, these works provide a structure for the artist to explore his endless fascination with color, light, and surface—while embracing the material world and the flawed touch of the artist's hand.
