Falling Leaves on Patio

This artwork depicts a small New York City balcony that has been chocked full of potted plants of all varieties by its owner. As in most of her paintings, the artist uses feathery brushstrokes to lovingly explore the lengths we go to create our own private refuges, even amid hundreds of thousands of other people.

Polly Shindler creates the living spaces in her paintings from her imagination as well as real and digital imagery. Drawn from a deep desire for solitude and retreat, Shindler stacks her artworks with colors, patterns, and textures that reference the history of art and architecture as she explores ideas surrounding the value of personal space.

Polly Shindler

Polly Shindler creates the living spaces in her paintings from a combination of her imagination and sourced imagery. Drawn from a deep desire for solitude and retreat, Shindler stacks her artworks with colors, patterns, and textures that reference the history of art and architecture, from a Louis XIV-style settee to a Jasper Johns painting. More recently, she has added the influence of outdoor views to her intimate rooms as she continues exploring ideas surrounding the value of personal space, an interest in location and the idiosyncrasies of place.
