Embrace

In this acrylic painting, two figures lying at a diagonal share an embrace. Like all the works in this series, the artist depicts these subjects with a deft simplicity, seamlessly weaving them into the spaces they occupy.

In Ramsey Alderson’s art, bodies contort quietly and obscenely in saturated primary and secondary colors. Although seemingly innocuous, their world begins to take on an ominous and distantly threatening appearance.

By using found photos of private situations as his source material, Alderson depicts his subjects as both personal and detached. He selects these images for their immediacy, vibrance, and applicability to his personal concerns: intimacy, excess, rest, and a visibly fraught relationship between viewer and subject.

③ Artist:

Ramsey Alderson

Ramsey Alderson’s painting practice takes inspiration from socially aware painters of the 19th and early-20th centuries, who provide a continuously relevant lens through which to view ourselves and each other. By using found photos of private situations as his source material, Alderson's subjects are at once personal and detached. He selects these images for their immediacy, vibrance, and applicability to his personal concerns: intimacy, excess, rest, and a visibly fraught relationship between viewer and subject.

Ramsey Alderson was born in 1991 and lives in San Pedro, CA.

He has mounted solo exhibitions at Commercial Street in Los Angeles, CA (2023-22) and Gaylord Apartments in Los Angeles, CA (2022).

The artist’s work has been included in group exhibitions at the Guzzler in Rosanna, Victoria, Australia (2021); Baader-Meinhof in Omaha, NE (2021); Commercial Street in Los Angeles, CA (2020); and 4th Ward Project Space in Chicago, IL (2015).
