Nicole Eisenman, one of the most important figurative painters working today, explores the human condition in prints, paintings, drawings and mixed-media works full of tenderness and dark humor. The artist is influenced by Pablo Picasso, expressionism, and impressionism, and populates their works with emotionally resonant, cartoonish figures—of themself, their friends and imagined characters. Eisenman uses energetic, painterly flourishes and intense colors to depict scenes that often focus on community and queer love.

BIO:

Nicole Eisenman lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. The artist is a MacArthur Foundation Fellow and was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2018. After establishing themselves as a painter, Eisenman expanded their practice into the third dimension.

Eisenman's work was included in both the 2019 Venice Biennale in Italy and the 2019 Whitney Biennial in New York City. Solo exhibitions of the artist's work include: Baden Baden Baden at the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Baden-Baden, Germany; Dark Light at Vielmetter Los Angeles in California; Dark Light at Secession in Vienna, Austria; Al-ugh-ories at the New Museum in New York City; and Magnificent Delusion at Anton Kern Gallery in New York City.

Eisenman’s work is held in the public collections of: the Art Institute of Chicago in Illinois; MoMA in New York City; the Tate in London, UK; and the Centre National des Arts Plastiques in Paris, France; among other institutions.
