Equal IV

This “Equal” features two rectangular panels arranged as a vertical “pairing” in which one form is placed on top of another. Comprised of eight “wall hangings,” the Equals were created with Paintstik on handmade Japanese paper.

The works are installed flush to the wall thanks to an invisible cleat system. Without a frame, the viewer is left with a pure experience of the artwork itself, freed from a traditional presentation. Installation instructions will be provided upon purchase.

Richard Serra is one of the most significant artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. He is known for his large-scale sculptures, many of which inform his printmaking endeavors as a method of conceptualizing mass, weight, and movement. Serra began an in-depth engagement with printmaking in 1972 and has created over 300 editions with Gemini GEL over the past fifty years.

Richard Serra

Richard Serra is one of the most significant artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. After some initial experimentations in art school, Serra began an in-depth engagement with printmaking in 1972 and has created over 300 editions with Gemini GEL over the past fifty years. Serra is known for his large-scale sculptures, many of which inform his printmaking endeavors as a method of conceptualizing mass, weight, and movement. Serra has exhibited extensively in major museums and has created site-specific sculptures for public and private venues worldwide.

Richard Serra (1939-2024) was born in San Francisco, CA.

Serra’s work has been the subject of two retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art, the first in 1986 and the second in 2007. Other recent exhibitions of note include the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain (1999); American Academy in Rome, Italy (2000); the Saint Louis Art Museum in St. Louis, MO (2003, 2014); Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Italy (2004); “Richard Serra Drawings— Work Comes Out of Work,” Kunsthaus Bregenz in Germany (2008); “Promenade,” Monumenta, Grand Palais in Paris, France (2008); “Richard Serra Drawing: A Retrospective” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, NY (2011).

Serra participated in dOCUMENTA in 1972, 1977, 1982, and 1987 and the Biennale di Venezia in 1980, 1984, 2001, and 2013.

His site-specific sculpture East-West/West-East (2014) was permanently installed in the desert of the Brouq Nature Reserve in western Qatar in 2014.

In 2015, Serra was awarded Les Insignes de Chevalier de l’Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur, France. Richard Serra passed away at his home in Orient, NY on March 26, 2024.
