Until the end of the nineteenth century, the only permissible materials for so-called fine art (at least in the Western world) were limited to paints like oil or watercolor, or marble and bronze for sculpture. But when artists began to adopt techniques from their own popular traditions, the options for artistic expression were radically expanded.
What differentiates art and porn? In the Supreme Court obscenity trials of the early 1960s, Justice Potter Stewart wrote, "I know it when I see it," and despite the subjectivity of the statement, he may have had point. The distinction is subtle, and probably has more to do with context than content.
