Employing a signature raw style, Derek Aylward's paintings are meditations on community and togetherness. The artist’s work frequently depicts mystical creatures that appear frozen in time alongside human figures dissipating into cubist backdrops. Aylward creates instantly classic compositions that combine humor and pop savvy with the bizarre and macabre—ranging in subject from Donald Duck taking a toke to parachuting skulls.
Derek Aylward was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1976. The artist attended The Art Institute of Boston in Massachusetts from 1997–1999.
A solo exhibition of Aylward’s work took place at SHRINE in New York City in 2021.
Group exhibitions that have shown Aylward’s work have taken place at: V1 Gallery in Copenhagen, Denmark; Sorry We’re Closed in Brussels, Belgium; Blum & Poe in Los Angeles, California; and Nassima-Landau in Tel Aviv, Israel.
