Leroy Winter

Fascinated by the prominence of mythmaking in American culture, Leroy Winter investigates symbols and iconography closely tied to Western frontier narratives while seeking to unearth their greater significance. Winter's recent series of artworks presents these tropes as specters of our past and reveal them as hallucinations that fade either in or out of our vision. The ghostly appearances of these painted creatures, which manifest as distant apparitions, provoke the viewer into questioning their relationship to nature and, more specifically, the existing narratives that populate the lands they inhabit.
