This photograph is part of a series documenting independently-owned hotels across the country, exploring America's complex relationship with these safe harbors and spaces of last resort. For each piece, the artist uses objects found in the hotel room to create a haunting site-specific sculpture that activates the previous tenants' intention of creating a new home.

③ Artist:

Alex Yudzon

Yudzon’s work draws attention to the modern world’s construction of personal spaces. He traveled alone while cataloguing independently-owned hotels, documenting at least one space in all of the contiguous United States. Each image depicts the process of finding and losing a home, a temporary shelter that is both a safe harbor and an option of last resort.

BIO:

Alex Yudzon was born in 1977 in Moscow. He holds a BA in painting from Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, UK, and studied at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. His work blurs the line between photography, painting, sculpture and performance.

Yudzon’s work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Miami Museum of Contemporary Art; the China International Photography Biennial; the Rencontres d’Arles in France; and NADA Miami.

Yudzon was an artist in residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts in the fall of 2017. In 2018, he had a solo show with Slag Gallery in Brooklyn. He was also in a two-person show that year at Rick Wester Fine Art in New York. In 2019, Yudzon was awarded a NYFA grant for photography; some of the work made from that grant was exhibited in 2021 as The Road Home at Elijah Wheat Showroom in Newburgh, New York.

His work has also been included in Contemporary Performance, a museum-wide exhibition at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts.

Yudzon lives and works in New York.
