① Artwork:

Youth and Asia

This painting's composition features images of magazine photos and ephemera from the artist's studio. Using a 4-color separation printing process, the artist screen printed her reference photographs onto the canvas, and then applied text made of pumice and acrylic to the surface. The title is a phrase Asghar wrote down while brainstorming exhibition title ideas. Some of the artist's reference materials are fantastical depictions of Asia in Western fiction and movies—frequently produced by Disney—as well as other cultural ephemera: music, food or household items made in Pakistan, from where Asghar's family immigrated. The artist’s sophisticated work explores her American experience through a multitude of cultural motifs, mixing imagery from across cultures.
