Invented from the Chaos Given to Interpret
This work records spectral events through intricate details of action and debris, much like the heritage rugs the artist grew up with. The events seem spontaneous yet specific. Their dynamic and haphazard remains are delicately woven and embedded into the polyester fibers of common area rugs. Asif Mian deconstructs South Asian craft traditions, reinvigorating them with processes sourced from science, technology and video. His work explores how memory, ritual and other behaviors are impacted by violence, and how healing might be achieved in its aftermath.
