"Oil painting, before anything else, was a celebration of private property. As an art-form it derived from the principle that you are what you have." - John Berger "It’s not good when this is the value of a house, it’s not fair, I like it, but it’s not a house." -Gerhard Richter on his painting

About the artwork:

Layering punchy, vernacular phrases drawn from the ubiquitous “WE BUY HOUSES” signage scattered throughout his home city of Los Angeles, Caleb Lyons painting transforms the language of real estate into a charged visual field. Bold color and gestural mark-making amplify the urgency and repetition of these messages, blurring the line between advertisement and abstraction. What first reads as humor gradually reveals a sharper commentary on cycles of speculation, exploitation, and desire embedded in the urban landscape. In elevating these overlooked fragments of everyday communication, the work exposes both their aesthetic vitality and the uneasy systems they represent.
