About the artist:
Daniel Wheeler paints images of quotidian objects from his life, removed from their original context and placed centrally on a blank ground. As such, he puts these seemingly unrelated images into dialogue with one another by removing any original hierarchy of importance, connecting them only through the artist’s linear practice. In this sense, Wheeler is playfully testing the boundaries of Proustian thought by exposing the limits of seminal memories or nostalgia in artistic communication. Painted serially in a literal yet alluring style, Wheeler balances the generic, the personal, and the art-historical within his oeuvre to contemplate the very nature of illustratory symbolism.
Daniel Wheeler was born in West Yorkshire, UK, in 1976. He received his BA at the Chelsea College of Art in London, UK (2014) and his MA from the Royal College of Art in London, UK (2022). Wheeler’s work has been featured in group exhibitions at Sid Motion Gallery, Unit 2, Fitzrovia Gallery, and Saachi Gallery, all in London, UK. The artist was shortlisted for the Clyde and Co Art Award and the 2014 Jerwood Drawing Prize. In that year, he was also longlisted for the John Moores Painting Prize. Wheeler lives in Essex, UK.

To the artist, the object in this image represents one of hundreds of anonymous objects always within our orbit. How they got there is often forgotten. They are only around for a particular, mundane purpose (like opening a wine bottle).
