① Artwork:
Lord, Take Me Away!
Evoking queerness through ritual practices in religion and BDSM, the artist weaves spiritual and carnal iconography together in this artwork. The gothic wooden frame and lenticular print coloring mimic the stained-glass windows of a church, while the narrative depicts an anal plug descending towards a submissive figure. Rooted in his personal experience, Kim’s playful jabs at religion and the taboo surrounding BDSM culture become an ode to queer pleasure as a spiritual practice in and of itself.
Dew Kim’s artistic practice is built on exploring various intersections of art, religion, and identity. He mainly works with videos and installations exploring sexuality, queerness, feminism, sadomasochism, pop culture, iconography, mysticism, and the body as forms of knowledge and research.
