Details:

This painting explores feelings of trust and betrayal by referencing the film "13 Going On 30," in particular, a scene at the protagonist's 13th birthday party, in which the girls suggest playing a kissing game called “7 minutes in heaven.” Sadly, the game was merely suggested so the invitees could ditch the party and leave the protagonist blindfolded and waiting for a kiss from her crush in the closet.

Countdown to Heaven

This painting explores feelings of trust and betrayal by referencing the film 13 Going On 30, in particular, a scene at the protagonist's 13th birthday party, in which the girls suggest playing a kissing game called “7 minutes in heaven.” Sadly, the game was merely suggested so the invitees could ditch the party and leave the protagonist blindfolded and waiting for a kiss from her crush in the closet.

The title of the painting references this 1990s American teenage game but also offers a larger question about life: Why do women strive for these “mature” actions and adopt destructive behaviors to impress their peers?

In her painting practice, Dylan Rose Rheingold explores the effects and experiences of contemporary American “girl culture” through visual symbols of her adolescence, femininity, and a heterogeneous cultural background. Her coming-of-age stories highlight humble difficulties like braces, birth control, heavy periods, and stretch marks by exploring everyday emotions and quotidian spaces.
