Mother Mary is a depiction of the Virgin Mary, a fundamental figure in the New Testament Bible and a major subject for Western art history. Mary is widely portrayed in masterworks from Gothic and Renaissance eras and, while the exact reference for this work is unknown, it is considered to be part of the artist’s (Biblical) Replica series—likely created from a combination of multiple references.

About the artist:

For three decades, Dylan Weaver has created abstract-figurative acrylic paintings, drawing reference points from a wide range of sources, including historical artworks spanning the Medieval Era to 20th-century Modernism, pop culture, and his daily life. Weaver's practice is largely shaped by his struggles with mental illness, which often results in a deep focus on recurrent themes and the development of concentrated series’ of works. These distinct series’, such as “Housewives and Lonely Men,” “Sports,” and “(Biblical) Replicas” visually trace the artist’s connection with history, culture and his own subconscious. Primarily self-taught, Weaver has grown to define a visual language that is gently irreverent, experimental, and wonderfully bizarre.

Dylan Weaver was born in 1976 in Youngstown, Ohio. Weaver attended Youngstown State University, where he became familiar with basic painting materials and techniques. Most recently, he has been included in group exhibitions at The Knox Building, Youngstown, OH; SARA’S, New York; and Espace Maurice, Montreal, among others. Weaver’s work has been shown locally in Ohio at The Trumbull Art Gallery, Greyland Gallery, and St John’s Episcopal Church. He was recently awarded a CSArt Project grant to develop a series on nature and the lunar calendar.
