Grin

This dichromatic study of blue and black depicts a woman’s grinning face in rhythmic lines that evoke the figure's exuberance. Viewers can sense a zeal in the artist's blending, blurring transverse strokes, and a confident expediency in the directness of her draughtsmanship.

Blending colored pencil, marker, gouache and other media, Hannah Taurins' vividly textural work challenges notions of beauty and seduction. The artist's compositions focus the viewer's gaze on alluring yet aloof female figures who toe the line between subject and object. Drawing from the likes of models, spies and performers, Taurins' work features women—both real and imagined—who have mastered the art of being seen. Each figure folds, fills or flexes their way into the artist's tight compositions, exacting their wills on the viewer's conventions of desire.
