This painting uses rich and dimly lit colors to depict a great blue heron wading through the reed grass and cattails of a marshland as it hunts by moonlight. There are many great blue herons in the northern coastal area of Michigan, where the artist lives and works. There is a camaraderie between these herons and the artist, who both move in silent solitude through the landscape while carefully observing everything with keen eyes and a focused mind.

James Morse’s paintings use land imagery as a language to explore the imperfections of human creativity and labor. The artist creates studies while on-site and later transforms these studies into expressive landscape paintings that embrace the interpretive nature of life. Drawing inspiration from abstract expressionist painters such as Lois Dodd and Jane Freilicher, Morse’s paintings contemplate the vicissitudes of humanity on the natural world.
