With a discerning approach to artmaking as a surface of layers and traces, Jean-Francois Lauda’s recent oil-on-canvas works refuse language and subject in favor of experimental encounters.

His art invites the viewer to enter an indeterminate place that revels in the freedom of painting—a field that remains open to any possibility. Through an intuitive approach and a knack for fugitive mark-making, Lauda embraces the unexpected as he focuses on the residual traces of the image.

Jean-François Lauda

Jean-Francois Lauda’s art invites the viewer to enter an indeterminate place that revels in the freedom of painting—a field that remains open to possibility. Through an intuitive approach and his knack for fugitive mark-making, Lauda embraces the unexpected as he focuses on the residual traces of the image. Informed by his talent in improvisational music, Lauda's compositions have a contrapuntal quality, revealing a constant desire to balance elements of chaos and order. In the end, Lauda creates expressive works in which gestures and geometries become intertwined.

JEAN-FRANCOIS LAUDA was born in Canada and currently works and lives in Montréal.

Lauda has mounted recent solo exhibitions at Romer Young Gallery in San Francisco, CA (2022); Joe Project in Montréal. Canada (2021); Parc Offsite in Montréal, Canada (2021); and Foire d’Art Genève in Geneva, Switzerland.
