Details:

This painting depicts a cougar in grey hues, with accents of black and white that explore the oscillating positions available between two absolutes. This technique reflects on the duality of the artist's life as an immigrant—Du spent the first half of his life in China, the second half in Ireland.

① Artwork:

Cougar

This painting depicts a cougar in grey hues with black and white accents. The artist thins down oil paint to create the very subtle transitions from dark to light. The small gradations are an exploration of the oscillating positions available between two absolutes, such as: strength and weakness; fast and slow; masculine and feminine; validation and rejection; external and internal; and conformity and independence. Similarly, Du’s recent work is representative of his status as an immigrant. The artist's life has been neatly divided into two parts—the first half in China; the second half in Ireland.
