Bliss is one of a two-part series of monochromatic, small-scale paintings. The floral motifs in these works reference cosmetic and wellness products- specifically the paper camelias used on Chanel packaging- a major cultural export of South Korea. Through this series, the artist explores the connecting lines between commerce, infrastructure, and the ever narrowing divide between the East and the West.

About the artist:

Jisoo You is a painter and sculptor who draws on the visual totems of modern life- jetplanes in flight, beauty packaging, and towering skyscrapers- subjects that inherently reference industry, culture, and technology, and the systems that shape contemporary existence. Smoothly rendered with a keen sensitivity to light and shadow, You’s work balances precision with atmosphere. Beneath their polished surfaces, her images often carry a subtle tension, where the seductive and the unsettling coexist, imbuing the familiar with an undercurrent of unease.

Jisoo You, (b. 1999, Korea) received her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2022. Recent exhibitions include Tutorial (w/ Sean Jun Yeon), Whistle, Seoul; Arabesque N.2 (w/ Daniel Zeballos), Everything, Chicago; Real World, White Noise, Seoul; A woman with a baguette. Another one., Ruschwoman, Chicago; Villa Hamilton in Seoul. She lives and works in Seoul, Korea.
