Blue Eyes are telling us exactly what they are and will always be. Do we dare question them? They do, after all, appear as eyes- windows into the soul- and they appear blue. Perhaps they are disguised by contact lenses, perhaps they are robed in cosmetic powder. Even so, even then, in their artifice, no one can deny that they are in some world of truth what they say they are. Their declarative power is not unlike a flag waved by modern society- united, for better or worse, by the manifested self.

About the artist:

Jisoo You is a painter and sculptor who draws on the visual totems of modern life- jetplanes in flight, beauty packaging, and towering skyscrapers- subjects that inherently reference industry, culture, and technology, and the systems that shape contemporary existence. Smoothly rendered with a keen sensitivity to light and shadow, You’s work balances precision with atmosphere. Beneath their polished surfaces, her images often carry a subtle tension, where the seductive and the unsettling coexist, imbuing the familiar with an undercurrent of unease.

Jisoo You, (b. 1999, Korea) received her BFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2022. Recent exhibitions include Tutorial (w/ Sean Jun Yeon), Whistle, Seoul; Arabesque N.2 (w/ Daniel Zeballos), Everything, Chicago; Real World, White Noise, Seoul; A woman with a baguette. Another one., Ruschwoman, Chicago; Villa Hamilton in Seoul. She lives and works in Seoul, Korea.
