Santibañez layers forms drawn from nature to imbue every inch of the canvas with its own expressive quality—asking viewers to contemplate each form as its own entity while at the same time experiencing how the composition comes together as a whole.

Of her work, Santibañez says: "I’ve been exploring the idea of a spiral for over 15 years. I want [my work] to address a concept of chaos in politics, climate change and psychology."

Katia Santibañez’s vibrant work utilizes grid structures to examine the intricacies and minutiae of organic forms. The artist approaches her gridded canvases precisely, allowing every inch to possess its own expressive quality; this produces layers of sharp, kaleidoscopic patterns that come together in hypnotic yet tranquil abstract compositions. Santibañez's process, a mixture of rigid formal parameters and swirling swaths of color, examines how the structure of objects found in nature can magnify a canvas—leading viewers to contemplate each component as its own entity while simultaneously absorbing how they come together as a whole.

BIO:

Katia Santibañez is an American, born in France. The artist studied painting at Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris, France.

Santibañez has been in residencies at Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, New York; Casa Wabi in Oaxaca, Mexico; the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Bethany, Connecticut; the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology in Otis, Oregon; and Civitella Ranieri in Umbria, Italy.

Santibañez's work has been collected internationally and is held in both private and public collections, including: the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York; the Bibliotheque Nationale de Paris in France; the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum in South Hadley, Massachusetts; and The Morgan Library and Museum in New York City.
