The artist created this painting with a custom-built painting drone and specialized software—resulting in aesthetic outcomes made not exclusively from the artist's decisions, but in concert with technology. The artist programs these drones to create portraits, still lifes and abstraction works on a human-sized canvas. This work explores notions of identity and artistic authorship through the collaborative art-making process between a human and a machine.
This painting is part of Citizen, a series by KATSU that extends his use of drones in painting and related new media practices. Other works from this series include large-scale public interventions and performances. The artist's visual and digital projects frequently question notions of reality, fiction and futurism by conceptually integrating ideas of vandalism with commercialism and technology.

The new media artist KATSU’s work encompasses drone painting, sculpture and digital media, as well as conceptual works, NFTs and video games. The artist’s visual and digital projects are often public interventions in technology and commercialism, exploring privacy and digital culture. KATSU’s work questions notions of reality and fiction espoused by futurism—integrating vandalism with commercialism and technology as a comment on concepts of identity and authorship.

KATSU is a Japanese American new media artist based in New York City.
KATSU received a BFA from Parsons School of Design, NY in 2005.
Solo exhibitions of KATSU’s work include: BITS at Ever Gold [Projects] in San Francisco, California (2021); DOT at The Hole in New York City (2020); DRONE at Diane Rosenstein Gallery in Los Angeles, California (2018); Memory Foam at The Hole in New York City (2018); AI Criminals at an unknown location in San Francisco, California (2017); and Remember the Future at The Hole in New York City (2015).
KATSU’s work has been written about in Wired, The New York Times, Time Magazine, Newsweek, Artforum, Artnet, The Wallstreet Journal, CNN, Verge, and Tech Crunch.
KATSU was an Eyebeam research fellow with Free Art and Technology Lab, a collective of creative technologists and hackers, from 2007–2015.
In 2016, KATSU was a Google creative technologist working on VR and machine learning projects.
In 2021, KATSU launched a series of multidisciplinary collaborations with Virgil Abloh, including a video game, fashion line, and site-specific installations.
