The Groupchat series marks a departure from the artist’s usual body of work, moving toward a more design-oriented approach that prioritizes color and material experimentation over carefully rendered compositions. In this series, immediacy takes precedence, with fast-paced mark-making replacing the refinement typically associated with the artist’s process. Chunky, buttery oil stick lines are central to the work, alongside graphite, conté crayon, and charcoal dust combined with matte medium and sealed with clear spray coats. Compositionally, the paintings draw from 1980s and 1990s haircut charts, using them as a loose framework to guide color and pattern decisions. The result is a practice driven by speed, intuition, and rapid decision-making.

About the artist:

Kevin Sabo (b. 1992) is an American painter working in Richmond, VA. His colorful, character-driven works use exaggerated proportions and distinct fashion choices to define his figures. Men in suits serve as symbols of masculine tropes in American culture—nodding to the corporate world and the twisted nature of manhood. In contrast, the feminine figures embody playful heroines, often seen stomping on these suited men with high heels, playfully subverting traditional gender dynamics.

Kevin Sabo has presented a number of solo exhibitions across the United States and Europe. Recent shows include Plastic Box at Katia David Rosenthal Gallery in Miami (October 2025) and Louche at Rhodes Contemporary in London (April 2025). In 2024, he exhibited Upper Crust at Edji Gallery in Brussels and The Big Wig at TW Fine Art in West Palm Beach. Earlier solo exhibitions include Fussy Fleur at Bim Bam Gallery in Paris (2022), Kimberly Pepperoni’s Closet at Kates-Ferri Projects in New York (2022), and Who Is She? at Schlomer Haus Gallery in San Francisco (2022).

His work has also been included in several group exhibitions, including Origins 2.0 at Rhodes Contemporary in London (2024), Somebody at Hashimoto Contemporary in Los Angeles (2022), and Le Corps-Paysage at Bim Bam Gallery in Paris (2022).

Sabo’s work has been featured in publications such as Juxtapoz Magazine, Architectural Digest, Metal Magazine, and Surface Magazine.
