Laura Vahlberg’s “Autumn Trees” (outdoor, Southwest Virginia, fall 2025) captures the peak of the season’s colors in a local park. Three tree trunks stretch toward the viewer at different depths, while the branching limbs act like arrows that guide the eye across the canvas, suggesting wind‑driven movement in the foliage on a bright, dry day. The palette is both riotous and restrained—a harmonious blend of expressive brushwork and precise detail.

About the artist:

Laura Vahlberg makes oil paintings outside and in her home studio. She looks for order amid the visual overload of everyday life. Each scene becomes a puzzle where countless details collapse into simple interlocking shapes creating a calm, ordered space for the viewer. Her influences include Milton Avery’s reduction of landscape to essential geometry and Henri Matisse’s bold shapes and flat colour fields.

Laura Vahlberg's work has been exhibited around the U.S. and internationally (Australia, Los Angeles, New York, Alabama, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and Virginia). She has studied with artists including Israel Hershberg, Ken Kewley, Ken Szmagaj, and Susan Jane Walp. She now lives in Roanoke, Virginia and received her Bachelors in Fine Arts at James Madison University. Her work can be seen in person at Reynold's Gallery (Richmond, VA) and Rhett Baruch Gallery (Los Angeles, CA).
