Psalm
In this painting, a nude woman calmly sits in a sunlit doorway.
In this series of works on paper, Havette aims to make a connection between intimate bonds and healing through female spirituality and mysticism. These artworks were also inspired by West African and European art traditions that feature female nudes that emit strength, dominance, heroism, and freedom.
Lewinale Havette depicts underlying themes of identity, gender and power dynamics, race, religion, and sexuality in her work. As a West African woman, she works to reposition black female bodies away from the lens of patriarchal capitalism and toward an art of self-expression.
