Viv, Bella, and Chiclet Sally

This painting depicts a trio of figures that personify Courage, Wisdom and Vision; together, they form a fierce trinity of spiritual, emotional and mental protection. Viv, the tiger, protects the group with a long arm outstretched across the trio. Bella, the crocodile, stares boldly and directly at the viewer, acknowledging their presence. Chiclet Sally, the bird figure, personifies knowledge and foresight with her sharp eagle eye and precise beak. The artist pays close attention to the individual patterning of each character, giving them autonomy and adding vibrancy to the scene. As in many of her narratives, each animal is an anthropomorphized magical being.

Lydia Maria Pfeffer mines a cross section of psychological strategies, cultural symbolism, rites and rituals. The artist draws and paints worlds in which escapism is revelation and queerness is a healing journey. In Pfeffer's compositions, anthropomorphism, gender play, and eroticism abound—featuring a morphing cast of stylish characters inspired by the fables, folk tales, and mythologies of the artist's youth. At the core of each of Pfeffer's paintings is a basic desire for love and belonging. The artist creates safe spaces for figures pulled from the ether, allowing them to tell their tales, process their traumas and heal.
