In these select works of collages, Thunder explores the separation and distinction of animalistic impulse with the human’s capability for higher spiritual contemplation. Through dissection, manipulation, and reconfiguration of early 2000’s magazine fragments of Ranger Rick and Y&M (young and modern), drawn annotations, and enamel paint, Thunder creates a new identity that reconciles the human with the animal drive, by melting their likeness together. Her collages and paintings alike, intend to remind the audience to of their wild nature- destabilizing themselves within pristine modernity.

About the artist:

Artist Marika Thunder was born and raised in New York City. Her series’ range from collages of pop culture, religious and ceremonial traditions, to exercise equipment and other heavy machinery she comes across during excursions to junkyards. However, they all share a common theme of depicting her chosen subjects in states of fragmentation, repair, and/or transformation. Her subversive and vibrant configurations are attempts to tap into the collective consciousness of individuals impacted by institutions and the surreal and formative memories we all share.
