Spray On #4

This print, a photograph taken in a steamy shower, explores the classical subject of bathers through a contemporary lens. The artist photographed female figures through the obscurity of glass and steam and then printed the compositions on aluminum panels—the final work takes on a sculptural permanence and this unusual surface adds another layer of complexity to the artist's subject. Fluctuating between abstraction and figuration, the body is obscured while colors blur together—just barely revealing intimate moments.

This work is from the artist’s recent project, Spray On, a suite of 5 prints. Minter’s approach recalls photographs by Saul Leiter, as well as impressionist masters like Degas and Bonnard. Minter's work frequently depicts the human form altered by the viewer's gaze and augmented by luxury goods and consumer beauty brands.
