Waiting for Now
This painting of a modern figure sitting with a cat evokes the Old Masters' use of color and references the history of portraiture in its composition. The artist explores historical techniques and subjects in his own work, creating an eerie out-of-time effect in images that seem both contemporary and timeless.

Mark Ryan Chariker’s work is a deeply personal response to the practice of painting. After abandoning an earlier abstract style, he started employing oil paints to explore landscape and figuration rendered in exacting color combinations. His work depicts modern figures in out-of-time settings, placing them in compositions that reference French rococo paintings, 19th-century illustrations and the Old Masters, among others.
