Details:

This new series of paintings integrates myth, memory, imagination, and lived experience while forging connections between fundamental human aspirations, desires, and fears. As in the work of artists such as Peter Paul Rubens, Titian, Guido Reni, Auguste Rodin, and Nicolas Poussin, she interrogates the Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus to explore the intricate themes of love, loss, and regret. In employing storytelling as a vital method for interpreting human existence and environment, DeVincentis uses her personal experiences to convey broader, universal truths.

Mary DeVincentis employs a deeply personal iconography in her art to investigate the dilemmas and mysteries of existence. Her paintings depict people, animals, and elements of nature with equal significance and numinosity. Her work is inspired by human stories—whether myth or memory, imagined or experienced, personal or societal, our stories connect us to our core concerns and deepest aspirations or fears. DeVincentis takes the elemental aspects of a narrative and transmits/transmutes fresh, resonant meaning to the viewer. These narratives suggest a painting’s imagery, emotional tone, and formal approach.
