Circular Tree

This anti-pastoral landscape depicts a nearly empty urban sidewalk with a tree haloed by a glowing orb around its branches. This work is part of a series by the artist that features nature and architecture in New York City. During the artist's daily commute to the city, he notices how neighborhoods, architecture, landscaping and light are all constantly changing. However, one thing stays consistent—people glued to their smartphones, missing these changes.

Masamitsu Shigeta constantly records these evolving elements with his iPhone to create reference materials for studies. Often starting small by painting on board, the artist finds symmetry, geometry and light in the places people walk past every day. As the work progresses into larger scales, Shigeta shifts the medium toward sculpture, either by shaping his canvas or using framing devices—often with materials found around the city or his studio. The resulting works are explorations and reflections of the initial moment captured in the reference photo.
