Murphy uses traditional media applications in unusual ways. The artist's work explores and dissolves the boundaries between painting, drawing and mechanical application. Murphy's compositions employ dream-like settings alongside humor and whimsy and often take direct inspiration from the artist's surroundings—including the parks of Brooklyn where he lives and the interior spaces he inhabits.

Matthew Bede Murphy’s work dissolves the distinction between painting, drawing and printmaking. The artist draws inspiration from his surroundings in Brooklyn and his paintings are often enlargements of drawings from his vast sketchbook library. Murphy’s work employs humor and whimsy in works that frequently explore random anxieties in dream-like settings.

BIO:

Matthew Bede Murphy was born in 1968. The artist studied at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston, Massachusetts; Parsons in Paris, France; and Russell Sage College in Albany, New York.

Murphy’s work has been exhibited widely in the United States and abroad, including at LMAKGallery in New York City; HERE Art Space in New York City; New Jorg Gallery in Kalmthout, Belgium; and Galerie ERGA in Montreal, Canada.

In 2009, Murphy collaborated with UFO Devotee group UNARIUS for two exhibitions in Los Angeles, California at the 18th Street Art Center as well as at La Mama Gallery in New York City. 

In 2019, Murphy’s work was featured alongside weavings by Cynthia Alberto in Shelter’s inaugural exhibition in New York City.

Murphy lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
