Mangiferin Bows
Part of a series, this painting honors and observes specific forms and patterns from the artist’s past that both haunt and nurture her present awareness. The artist draws these forms from multiple sources—personal memories and photographs as well as historic images and artworks that signify South Asia—as they live within the collective public, yet are in need of relearning. Collapsing these forms with the nostalgia that surrounds them, the artist creates a fluid composition that takes viewers on a journey of fantastical possibilities.
Hasan employs a nuanced approach to representation, subjectivity and personhood as a way of articulating a South Asian American diasporic experience. Working in painting and handmade materials, the artist constructs her works through metaphorical engagement with both material and process—developing a complex language of mark making that asks the viewer to participate in the work itself. Hasan’s work both states and questions the artist's own historical perspective, while allowing the viewer to participate in order to reimagine their own.

BIO:
Meena Hasan was born in New York City in 1987. The artist received a BFA in Studio Art from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio in 2009 and an MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale School of Art in New Haven, Connecticut in 2013.
Solo exhibitions of Hasan’s work have taken place at: LAUNCH F18 in New York City (2021); Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island (2019); and the American Academy in Rome, Italy (2010); among others.
Group exhibitions that have shown Hasan’s work include: the New England Triennial at the deCordova Museum in Lincoln, Massachusetts (2022); Good Pictures at Jeffrey Deitch in New York City (2020); No Longer, Not Yet at Essex Flowers in New York City (2020); Stages at Zurcher Gallery in New York City (2016); and The Landscape Changes 30 Times at Anahita Art Gallery in Tehran, Iran (2015).
Work by Hasan is held in numerous collections, including: the Miami University Art Museum in Oxford, Ohio; Haas Arts Library at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut; the Jiménez-Colón Collection in Ponce, Puerto Rico; and the Peggy Cooper Cafritz Collection in Washington, DC.
