Days And Days

This painting explores the habitual nature of daily life. Routines provide comfort—wake up, eat, split a banana—but can also be confining. The title is a reference to a song from the musical adaptation of Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home.

MJ Torrecampo’s paintings explore themes of family, the mundane and the individual’s relationship to the group. The artist's work questions the close social relationships we maintain and their complications—especially their simultaneous aspects of unity and division. Torrecampo's compositions begin as memories selected by the artist, then reconstructed with details that suggest an underlying tension and uncertainty, as well as a dual sense of belonging and not belonging. Torrecampo's work depicts what are commonly considered dull moments, in an effort to discover what they can tell say about our relationships with others and the space. As she spends more years in the States than her birth country of the Philippines, the artist's work deepens its investigation of the push and pull of being raised in one culture and then growing and living in another.
