This work was painted in Brooklin, Maine, from an image taken while hiking in the coastal woods of Downeast Maine. The artist has spent the past two summers there, gradually finding a way to work from the unfamiliar landscape. Over time, Kuijpers became especially attuned to moments when clouds briefly illuminate the woods, and with this work sought to capture that shifting light while resisting the pull of vertical forms.

Oidie Kuijpers is a painter based in Brooklyn, New York. His work explores representation and approaches painting as a form of critical inquiry. Working primarily in a square format, he paints slowly from digital images of his own making. Attentive to different qualities of light, each painting develops through its own studied process of depiction.
