Richard Tinkler's paintings and drawings are both instinctual and labor intensive. Built up through intricate layering, the work manages to feel rigidly structured and hallucinatory at the same time. Tinkler starts with geometric grids, working from a consistent vocabulary of shapes, colors, and application methods. Each painting builds on the last, extending an ongoing visual language from one work to the next. Often completed in a single day, the pieces rely on intuition over planning—wet layers piled onto still-wet layers until a woven structure emerges, with geometric shapes that seem to float, drift, and dissolve. The results resemble psychedelic tapestries or otherworldly environments, where paint functions as both a physical material and something more charged.

About the artist:

Richard Tinkler's paintings and drawings reflect an approach that is instinctual and labor intensive. A queering of impressionist convention, Tinkler presents a new perspective on the historically heterosexual and masculine genre of abstract painting. His intricately layered pieces are simultaneously rigidly structured and hallucinatory, emanating light and shadow through tonal shift. Central to Tinkler’s practice are his meticulously and obsessively rendered drawings. Tinkler’s drawings are kaleidoscopic abstractions that utilize a gridded compositional strategy to create complex and energetic geometries. Each drawing is developed over numerous sittings, and requires between twenty and thirty hours of diligence to reach a finished state.

Tinkler received a BA in 1999 from the University of North Texas, and an MFA in 2003 from Hunter College.
