Twill Series (Orchid/Firecracker)
Featuring circuit-like arrangements of interconnected shapes, this meticulous weaving showcases the integration of color and pattern that is fundamental to the artist's process. Laskey pays grave attention to the material structure of her weavings, using the painstaking twill method as a brushstroke built into the picture plane. In this work, sections of twill are punctuated by dyes of verified hue. This approach disrupts the monotonous rhythm of what would otherwise be a plain-woven canvas.

Ruth Laskey’s practice is a rich exploration of gesture and the complex relationships between form, color and space. In her textile works, she employs dye, thread and a loom to weave intricate geometric forms that fade in and out of focus. By scrutinizing her materials’ inherent constraints, she produces works that contemplate the definitive nature and construction of the canvas.
