This work on paper is a print with additional marks painted by hand. Like many of the artist’s works, this composition initially appears thoroughly abstract, but upon further reflection, representational elements reveal themselves—in this case, a striding human form.
Majumdar is drawn to experiences that resist direct interpretation. The artist's work is rooted in perception, and explores how sense is derived from the visible world. Majumdar finds inspiration in the tactile nature of making something with both the body in mind. The artist's work proposes a participatory connection between the viewer and the subject—opening the door for narrative, memories and direct sensory encounters.

Rooted in perception, Sangram Majumdar’s work explores how sense is derived from the visible world. The artist draws inspiration from disparate painting traditions, as well as the symbiotic relationship between light and color. Majumdar’s work proposes a participatory connection between the viewer and the subject—opening the door for narrative, memories and direct sensory encounters.
BIO:
Sangram Majumdar was born in Kolkata, India. The artist received an MFA from Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island.
Solo exhibitions of Majumdar’s work have taken place at: Geary Contemporary in New York City; Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects in New York City; and Asia Society Texas Center in Houston, Texas.
Group exhibitions that have shown Majumdar’s work have taken place at: Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Los Angeles, California; The Landing Gallery in Los Angeles, California; and James Cohan Gallery in New York City; among others.
Majumdar has been the recipient of awards, fellowships, and honors, including: a Mellon Faculty Fellow in Arts; a NYFA Grant in Painting; a Purchase Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York; a MacDowell Fellowship; a residency at Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, New York; the 2009–10 Marie Walsh Sharpe Studio Space Program Grant; and a MICA Trustees Award for Excellence in Teaching from MICA in Baltimore, Maryland.
In 2019, Majumdar was inducted into the National Academy of Design.
Majumdar’s work has been reviewed in Artforum, The Brooklyn Rail, and Hyperallergic, among others.
Majumdar has lectured on his work at numerous institutions, including: Columbia University in New York City; RISD in Providence, Rhode Island; CCA in the Bay Area of California; Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; Pratt in Brooklyn, New York; PAFA in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; SUNY-Purchase in Purchase, New York; Princeton University in Princeton, New Jersey; and the New York Studio School in New York City.
Majumdar lives and works in Seattle, Washington, where he is an Assistant Professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Washington.
