Sharon Madanes is a painter and doctor who transforms the banalities of her experience with treating patients in her hospital’s medical and psychiatric wards into bold, highly saturated scenes. Her art is a testament to how her work as a doctor informs her studio practice, but it also eloquently reimagines the hospital as a space of discovery, meaning, and beauty.

Sharon Madanes

Sharon Madanes is a painter and doctor who transforms the banalities of hospital life into bold, highly saturated scenes. Madanes paints from her experience with treating patients in her hospital’s medical and psychiatric wards, drawing from her memories and from sketches made during periods of downtime from her shifts. Her paintings stand as a juxtaposition of humdrum institutional moments that relate to matters of life and death. Born of her own sense of duality, straddling two professional identities, Madanes' paintings attest to the way her work as a doctor informs her work as an artist. They also reimagine the hospital as a space of discovery, meaning and beauty.

Sharon Madanes was born in 1985 in Chicago, IL, and currently resides in New York, NY. She received her BA from Yale University, New Haven, CT, her MFA from Hunter College, New York City, NY, and attended medical school at Columbia University, New York City, NY.

Madanes has had her work featured in recent group shows such as Intimacy at Taymour Grahne Projects in London, UK (2022); The Scenic Route at 1969 Gallery in New York City, NY (2021); The Practice of Everyday Life at Slag Gallery in New York City, NY (2019); and Open Sessions 14: Spirit Level at The Drawing Center, New York City, NY (2019).

Madanes has received several awards, including the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Award and the Mortimer Hays-Brandeis Traveling Fellowship. She has also been selected for residencies such as the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Shandaken Paint School.
