This painting depicts five swimmers diving into a pool at the beginning of a race. While creating this work, the artist reflected on how the dark skin tones and afros of the figures might affect the composition. The artist added vibrant tropical colors to the figures' swimsuits in an effort to get viewers to imaginatively inquire about their origins.

Light and humorous, Sheena Rose’s work tackles concerns related to identity and affirmation. Many of the artist's compositions feature larger-than-life athletes, and her work mimics classic patterns and colors from the seventies that purposely take up space.

Featuring larger-than-life athletes, lovers, and friends, Rose’s work tackles concerns related to identity and affirmation. The artist’s practice encompasses painting, drawing, performance art, new media and mixed media. Rose’s works are light and humorous, mimicking classic patterns and colors from the seventies that purposely take up space.

BIO:

Sheena Rose was born 1985. The artist received an MFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, North Carolina in 2016. Rose is a Fulbright Scholar. 

A solo exhibition of Rose’s work, Born of the Sea, took place at De Buck Gallery in New York City in 2022. Other solo exhibitions of Rose’s work have taken place at: Showfields in New York City (2021); and the Royal Academy of the Arts in London, UK (2017). 

In 2022, Rose was the recipient of a mural commission by Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. The artist also had murals commissioned by the Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNCG (2021); and the InterAmerica Development Bank Headquarters in Washington DC (2019).

Group exhibitions of Rose’s include Skin in the Game, curated by Zoe Lukov with iterations in Chicago (2022) and Miami (2021); as well as shows at: Johansson Projects in Oakland, California (2022); the UN Women Benefit Auction with Artsy (2021); PRIZM Art Fair with Artsy (2020, 2017); Perez Art Museum in Miami, Florida (2019); Pearlstein Gallery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2017); Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation in New York City (2017); The Asia Culture Center in Gwangju, South Korea (2016); Art Basel in Miami, Florida (2015); and the Brooklyn Museum in New York City (2015); among others.
