This painting—made in Charleston, South Carolina—was inspired by the local flowers and colors collected on the seashore. This work is part of a series by the artist, 5–6 pm, completed aboard the sailing vessel Selkie during a sub-tropical winter. This work is small, constrained by the limited space aboard the vessel. With this composition, the artist aimed to present as many colors and gray scales as possible on a 10-12" square frame. The subtle changes in palette evoke visual information, as well as sounds, smells and tactile sensations.

Shuliing Guo’s paintings explore connections between color, palettes and form and thoughts, memories and emotion. The artist uses oil on canvas with fine gradient colors and forms taken from moments in nature—evoking a silent feeling. Guo's work reflects her life experience, with the most recent period inspired by two years of living and traveling by sea. For the artist, painting is an everyday activity and spiritual need, and each of her works is associated with a specific place and time.
