① Artwork:

Blues Men (Otis Redding)

This etching is based on a series of iconic watercolors. Working from source photography depicting renowned blues and soul musicians, the artist isolated their faces from all other details and rendered these portraits with just a few strokes. The negative space of the blue background in these etchings forms the contours of the face, which recall’s Schütte’s well-known sculptures of ceramic heads. Schütte's work frequently explores the role of the artist in society; these tender portraits of Black Americans evoke the rapport between subject and artist, as well as the significant barriers the musicians faced in their artistic lives.

The series of watercolors used to create these etchings were made by the artist for the 2019 exhibition of his work at Kunsthaus Bregenz. The print portfolio was also created specifically for the Kunsthaus Bregenz exhibition. Schütte selected eight portraits from the watercolor series and rendered them as etchings, each one larger than the watercolors. The original works were also enlarged as billboards to promote the exhibition.
